IDOC Honor Guard places first in statewide competition

The Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) Honor Guard won first place in Statewide Honor Guard Competition hosted and coordinated by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department in Springfield May 1. Six teams competed for the award. The competition consisted of intense inspections, marching a marked course, posting colors and the recovery of the flag from a casket with proper condolences.

"The IDOC Honor Guard represents the best the department has to offer," said Director Donald N. Snyder Jr. "The pride is shown in their dress, professionalism, appearance and commitment to excellence."

"The IDOC Honor Guard is a statewide team with members from the department's adult and juvenile centers as well as boot camps," said Chief of Program Services Linda Dillon, who is responsible for directing the department's Honor Guard. "The IDOC Honor Guard was created in May 1998. Today, this 30-member team provides details to present colors at funerals and graveside services, groundbreakings and dedications as well as other agency events."

The IDOC's Honor Guard members who participated in the competition were Youth Supervisor II Anthony Leggett at Illinois Youth Center-Murphysboro, who serves as the IDOC Honor Guard commander, Correctional Officer Krista Ping at Centralia Correctional Center, Correctional Officer James Collin at East Moline Correctional Center, Youth Supervisor II Nathan Dillow at Illinois Youth Center-Murphysboro, Correctional Officer Michael McClelland at Tamms Correctional Center, Correctional Officer James Scott at Pinckneyville Correctional Center, Sergeant Anne Anderson at Sheridan Correctional Center and Correctional Officer Kenneth Williams at Vandalia Correctional Center. Back-up members included Correctional Officer William Candlish at Lincoln Correctional Center and Correctional Officer Phillip Tyree at Stateville Correctional Center. Tom Ogilvy, a reproduction service technician in Springfield, played bagpipes at the competition's closing ceremony.

Other teams participating in the competition were the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department, Thorton Police Department, Sangamon County Sheriff's Department, Peoria Police Department and Rosemont Public Safety Department.

Judges included Honor Guard representatives of the Air Guard, Army Guard, Springfield Fire Department and two drill instructors from the Illinois State Police Academy.
