Honor Guard places first in statewide competition
The
Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) Honor Guard won first
place in Statewide Honor Guard Competition hosted and coordinated
by the Sangamon County Sheriff's Department in Springfield May 1.
Six teams competed for the award. The competition consisted of intense
inspections, marching a marked course, posting colors and the recovery
of the flag from a casket with proper condolences.
"The IDOC
Honor Guard represents the best the department has to offer,"
said Director Donald N. Snyder Jr. "The pride is shown in their
dress, professionalism, appearance and commitment to excellence."
"The IDOC
Honor Guard is a statewide team with members from the department's
adult and juvenile centers as well as boot camps," said Chief
of Program Services Linda Dillon, who is responsible for directing
the department's Honor Guard. "The IDOC Honor Guard was created
in May 1998. Today, this 30-member team provides details to present
colors at funerals and graveside services, groundbreakings and dedications
as well as other agency events."
The IDOC's
Honor Guard members who participated in the competition were Youth
Supervisor II Anthony Leggett at Illinois Youth Center-Murphysboro,
who serves as the IDOC Honor Guard commander, Correctional Officer
Krista Ping at Centralia Correctional Center, Correctional Officer
James Collin at East Moline Correctional Center, Youth Supervisor
II Nathan Dillow at Illinois Youth Center-Murphysboro, Correctional
Officer Michael McClelland at Tamms Correctional Center, Correctional
Officer James Scott at Pinckneyville Correctional Center, Sergeant
Anne Anderson at Sheridan Correctional Center and Correctional Officer
Kenneth Williams at Vandalia Correctional Center. Back-up members
included Correctional Officer William Candlish at Lincoln Correctional
Center and Correctional Officer Phillip Tyree at Stateville Correctional
Center. Tom Ogilvy, a reproduction service technician in Springfield,
played bagpipes at the competition's closing ceremony.
Other teams
participating in the competition were the DeKalb County Sheriff's
Department, Thorton Police Department, Sangamon County Sheriff's
Department, Peoria Police Department and Rosemont Public Safety
Department.
Judges included
Honor Guard representatives of the Air Guard, Army Guard, Springfield
Fire Department and two drill instructors from the Illinois State
Police Academy.
